Prominent singer Katy Perry said a bad joke and compared her previous black-dyed hair to Barack Obama. Some of her followers considered the joke as being against Obama.
On Saturday, Perry joked about Obama while she was live on her Instagram account which led to many angry reactions from people including her followers.
The joke was as follows:
“Someone says I miss your old black hair'” Perry said.
“Oh, really? Do you miss Barack Obama as well? Oh, OK. Times change. Bye! See you guys later.” Perry answered.
Since Perry has always been supportive to Obama and is a part of the Black Lives Matter movement, people blamed the famous singer saying the joke was racist and insensitive.
Perry then received many harsh comments criticizing her joke.
“Not Katy Perry pretending to be a woke activist then making an insensitive joke comparing her hair to Obama,” someone said.
Another person commented: “Katy Perry’s joke was just very tasteless. What does black hair have to do with Barack Obama … just bad.”
“Wow, Katy Perry. The reference to former President Obama was offensive and a poor, tasteless attempt at humour. Your privilege is showing,” another person said.
However, as many people accused Perry of being racist, others thought that her joke was just misunderstood.
Perry was a huge supporter for Hillary Clinton in the latest presidential elections. She even made special heels to honor Clinton, Democrat presidential candidate. Perry also stood side by side with Clinton at the UNICEF Snowflake Ball, just after the election.
As for Perry’s response about the joke, her representative didn’t respond immediately for a comment.
